Mohammed Shami has etched his name in the Indian cricket history books by surpassing legendary bowlers like Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath

In a thrilling World Cup 2023 encounter at Wankhede, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami made history by claiming the record for the most five-wicket hauls in ODIs for India. This achievement propels Shami to the top of the list, surpassing the legendary duo of Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath, both of whom had picked up three five-wicket hauls during their illustrious careers.

Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath, two stalwarts of Indian cricket, had long held the record with their exceptional bowling performances. However, Shami’s stellar display at Wankhede not only elevated him to the pinnacle of this prestigious list but also secured India’s victory.

Most five-wicket hauls for India in ODIs

Mohammed Shami – 4

Harbhajan Singh – 3

Javagal Srinath – 3

The match began with Team India opting for the same lineup that faced England in the previous game. Despite an early setback with skipper Rohit Sharma departing on the second ball of the innings, India managed to post an impressive total of 357/8 while batting first.

The Indian seamers, led by the formidable Jasprit Bumrah, took charge early in the game. Bumrah set the tone by dismissing Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka on the very first ball of the innings. Mohammed Siraj, too, had a dream start as he removed Karunaratne with his first delivery, before setting the visitors back with memories of the Asia Cup final with a score of 3-4.

However, the real star of the bowling show was Mohammed Shami. Joining the wicket-taking spree, Shami claimed the prized wicket of Asalanka with his third delivery. He continued to wreak havoc on the Sri Lankan batting lineup, dismissing Dushan Hemantha, Angelo Matthews, and Dushmantha Chameera in quick succession. Shami’s exceptional bowling reached its pinnacle when he dismissed Kasun Rajitha, securing his fifth wicket and breaking the longstanding record.
