Sunil Gavaskar has identified Rohit Sharma's slow footwork as the main reason for his dismissal against Australia

Sunil Gavaskar has given his analysis of Rohit Sharma’s subpar performance in the ICC World Cup against Australia. He criticized the veteran opener’s slow footwork. India’s top order failed in the crucial clash and they were 2-3.

Three of India’s top four batters, Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer, failed to score a single run in the ICC World Cup 2023 opener against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This marked the first instance in ODI history where such a scenario unfolded.

Despite Rohit Sharma’s impressive performance in the final ODI against Australia before the World Cup, scoring 81 off 57 balls, he faced a setback. Josh Hazlewood outsmarted the Indian skipper, dismissing him early in the low-scoring encounter at Chepauk.

Sunil Gavaskar expressed his concern about Rohit Sharma‘s start in the World Cup. He noted that the slow footwork of Rohit Sharma makes him susceptible to incoming deliveries.

“The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, scored five hundreds and a couple of half-centuries during the last tournament. He started the opening game with a zero this time, which may be his final World Cup. To begin with, the footwork is rather sluggish, which leaves him open to the incoming delivery. India will be guaranteed a strong start to their campaign if he can recapture his 2019 form,” Gavaskar wrote in his column in Sportsstar.

Looking ahead, Rohit Sharma aims to rectify his performance in India’s upcoming match against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Gavaskar emphasized the unpredictable nature of the tournament, stating that no team can be considered a favorite after playing their first match. He highlighted the excitement of the competition and labeled it potentially the most thrilling of all.
