Week 1 - The Engineering Design Process and Paper Tower Challenge |

During the first week of our after school program at Shady Hill, we introduced the students to the Engineering Design Process and then completed the Paper Tower Challenge to show them how to apply it. The goal of this challenge was to build a tower that could support as many water bottles (with varying levels of fullness) as possible. The students learned about trusses and sturdy building as well as the Engineering Design Process. They also learned about constraints of materials (they could only use so many paper clips, sheets of paper, etc.) which is another constraint that engineers face in the real world.
