1983 World Cup win
Andy Roberts remarked that luck favoured India in 1983 World Cup final

The ICC World Cup 2023 is three months away, and eyes are on hosts India, who have pressure to end their 10-year-long trophy drought.

Amid the hype for the upcoming mega-event, fans and experts are mentioning India’s triumph in the 2011 and 1983 World Cups. Meanwhile, in recent events, West Indies legend and one of the fastest bowlers of his time, Andy Roberts, disregarded India’s efforts in 1983 final and remarked that the luck was in their favour.

“We lost to India but were not outplayed by them. We were in form and lost just two games from 1975-83, and that too from India. If you look at the series after the 1983 World Cup, we beat India 6-0. It was just one bad game for us, and the luck was in India’s favour.”

“When Viv Richards got out, we failed to recover from that. India were lucky as none of their players impressed in the finals. No batter scored a fifty, nor any bowler took a five or four-wicket haul.”

Notably, Roberts’ remarks came days after West Indies, for the first time in their history, failed to qualify for a World Cup.
