FAQs about the Zimbabwe cricket team

What happened to the Zimbabwe cricket team?

Cricket in Zimbabwe suffered a crisis that lasted from 2003 to 2011 where player withdrawals such as the “Black-armband protest” by Andy Flower and Henry Olonga along with a mass loss of players in 2004 due to a general strike resulted in very poor performances by the national team.

How old Is Zimbabwe cricket team?

Zimbabwe A played their first match in January 1994, a four-day first-class contest against the touring South Africa A cricket team.

Has Zimbabwe defeated India?

India were once again defeated by Zimbabwe, this time in December 2000. It was a closely-fought 1-wicket win in Jodhpur.

Why did ICC suspend Zimbabwe?

Why were Zimbabwe suspended? The ICC met in London last week and, among other things, decided to immediately suspend Zimbabwe for, officially at least, failing to provide a process for free and democratic elections, and failing to ensure that there is no government interference in its governance.

Where is Zimbabwe ranked in the world?

The land has a total area of 390,760 km² (150,873 mi²). This land area is approximately 97% of the area of California. Zimbabwe is thus the 26th biggest country in Africa and in terms of area ranked 61st worldwide.

The Bangladesh men’s national cricket team became an associate member of the ICC in 1977. They competed in six ICC Trophies, the leading ODI competition for non-Test-playing nations. They entered international cricket with the 1979 ICC Trophy in England. Bangladesh’s first one-day match was against Pakistan in the Asia Cup in March 1986.

The watershed moment in Bangladesh cricket came when they won the ICC Trophy in Malaysia in 1997. They qualified for their first Cricket World Cup in England in 1999. Bangladesh stunned the cricketing world by defeating Pakistan, causing the tournament’s biggest upset. Bangladesh also defeated Scotland in the ICC event. In June 2000, Bangladesh were granted full ICC membership.

They played their first Test match against India in Dhaka in November 2000. Bangladesh became the tenth Test-playing nation. Although they scored 400 plus in the first innings, they lost the match by nine wickets.

Bangladesh had to wait until 2004 to register their first one-day victory since the 1999 World Cup when they beat Zimbabwe. They also beat Zimbabwe to register their maiden Test victory in 2005. They drew the second Test and thus registered their maiden Test series win. In 2009, Bangladesh visited the West Indies for two Tests. They won both games and secured their first overseas Test series victory.

Bangladesh reached the quarter-finals of the 2015 ODI World Cup. They have been runners-up thrice in the Asia Cup, in 2012, 2016, and 2018. They went down to India in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy final in a pulsating last-ball finish. In 2019, Bangladesh won the Ireland Tri-Nation Series. This was their first-ever win in a multi-nation ODI tournament final win.

Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Habibul Bashar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Rafique, Mohammad Ashraful, Aminul Islam, Akram Khan, Mustafizur Rahman are regarded among Bangladesh’s finest players.

A Sri Lankan team first played international cricket as Ceylon in 1926-27. Renamed Sri Lanka in 1972, they featured in the inaugural edition of the ODI World Cup in 1975. Sri Lanka was awarded Test cricket status in 1981 and played their first Test match against England at P. Saravanamuttu Stadium, Colombo, in February 1982. Bandula Warnapura was the captain in Sri Lanka’s first Test, which England won by 7 wickets

Sri Lanka’s first Test win came in September 1985, when they beat India by 149 runs at the Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium, Colombo, under the leadership of Duleep Mendis. The Lankans went on to win the Test series 1-0. Their next Test series win came seven years later, against New Zealand in December 1992. They subsequently beat England by one wicket in a one-off Test.

The cricket world took notice of Sri Lanka’s talent when they lifted the ODI World Cup in 1996, just 14 years after being granted Test status. They were among the pioneers in exploiting the one-day field restrictions in the first 15 overs. The island nation remained a strong force in the game in the coming years. They also won the 2001-02 Asian Test Championship, defeating Pakistan in the final by an innings and 175 runs.

Sri Lanka made consecutive World Cup finals in 2007 and 2011, ending up as runners-up both times. They also won the T20 World Cup in 2014 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002. They lifted the Asia Cup for the sixth time in 2022.

Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda De Silva, Lasith Malinga, Chaminda Vaas, Arjuna Ranatunga, Marvan Atapattu, Angelo Matthews, Duleep Mendis are considered among the greatest Sri Lankan cricketers of all time.

England is regarded as the birthplace of cricket. England and Australia were the first teams to play Test matches (March 15-19, 1877). The same two sides also played the first ODI on January 5, 1971. England’s first T20I was played on June 13, 2005, and came against Australia. The England-Australia Ashes rivalry is the oldest in cricket and one of the game’s biggest. During the 1938 Ashes, Len Hutton scored 364, which remains the highest by an Englishman in Test cricket.

While England have won the Ashes 32 times, they have lifted the T20 World Cup twice (2010 and 2022) and the ODI World Cup (2019). In fact, they are the reigning world champions in both formats. The English side also made the 50-over final in 1979, 1987, and 1992 and the T20 World Cup final in 2016. The 2019 World Cup final ended in a tie, and so did the Super Over, but England were declared the winner on the boundary count rule.

Sir Jack Hobbs, Wally Hammond, Sir Len Hutton, Fred Trueman, Sir Ian Botham, Bob Willis, James Anderson, Kevin Pietersen, Sir Alastair Cook, Andrew Strauss, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Stuart Broad are some of the finest cricketers to represent the nation. Presently, England are revolutionizing Test cricket with their ‘Bazball’ approach.

Pakistan made their Test debut in July 1952. They took on India at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground (now Arun Jaitley Stadium) in Delhi in October 1952. India won the match by an innings and 70 runs. During their first tour of England in 1954, they drew the series 1–1 with a victory at The Oval in which fast bowler Fazal Mahmood claimed 12 wickets.

Pakistan kept improving as a team through the 70s and 80s and are known for producing some of the most fearsome fast bowlers in world cricket. They won their first major title when they came back from near-elimination to lift the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand under Imran Khan’s inspirational leadership.

They co-hosted the 1987 World Cup with India and were runners-up in the 1999 edition held in England. Pakistan won the 2009 T20 World Cup and were runners-up in the 2007 edition as well as in 2022. They also stunned India by lifting the 2017 Champions Trophy, apart from becoming the fourth team to lift the mace of the ICC Test Championship in 2016.

The India-Pakistan rivalry is considered one of the greatest in cricket history. In 1986, Javed Miandad famously hit a last-ball six off Chetan Sharma to help Pakistan win the Austral-Asia Cup. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli scored a spectacular 82* off 53 to see India beat Pakistan at the MCG.

Javed Miandad, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Qadir, Saeed Anwar, Shoaib Akhtar, and Babar Azam are some of the renowned names to have represented Pakistan in international cricket.

Wasim Akram, 33 (18) & 3/49, was the Player of the Final in the 1992 World Cup against England in Melbourne.

What is the Pakistan cricket spot-fixing scandal?

During a Test match against England at Lord’s, London, in August 2010, three players – Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif, and Mohammad Amir – were convicted of taking bribes from a bookmaker to deliberately bowl no-balls at certain pre-arranged moments during the Test and were subsequently banned.

Which Pakistan player has taken a hat-trick in Tests and ODIs?

Wasim Akram and Mohammad Sami are the only players to have taken hat-tricks in ODIs and Tests.

The New Zealand Cricket Council was formed back in December 1894. However, it was in 1930 that the Kiwis were given Test status. They became the fifth Test-playing nation in cricket history when they took on England in Christchurch. The Kiwis had to wait for over 26 years to celebrate their first Test win, which came against the West Indies at Eden Park in Auckland in 1956. The New Zealand cricket team played its first ODI in 1972-73 against Pakistan in Christchurch.

New Zealand have featured in all the ICC Men’s events that have taken place since 1975. Although they have been very consistent, they have not been able to win a lot of trophies. The Kiwis have always been viewed as a side that has outshone its potential. They are regarded as fighters, comprising moderately talented players, but ones who can outdo the best on their day.

This competitive spirit has seen them make it to the finals of major tournaments. New Zealand have two big ICC titles to their name. In October 2000, they won the ICC Champions Trophy (Knockout), defeating India in the final as Chris Cairns scored a memorable hundred. In June 2021, they won the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC), again defeating India in the final.

The Kiwis also made it to three other finals but failed at the last hurdle. They reached their first World Cup final in Australia in 2015, going down to the hosts at the summit at the MCG. They also made the final of the 2019 World Cup. They tied the final with England in a pulsating clash on that occasion. The Super Over scores were also tied. However, the Englishmen were declared winners on a bizarre boundary-count rule. The New Zealand cricket team also made it to the UAE’s final of the 2021 T20 World Cup but were hammered by the Aussie and had to settle for the runners-up crown again.

Sir Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Glenn Turner, Stephen Fleming, Chris Cairns, Nathan Astle, Brendon McCullum, Shane Bond, Ross Taylor, Daniel Vettori, and Kane Williamson are some of the most famous names to have represented the Kiwis in international cricket over the years.

South Africa began their first-class and international journey together when they faced England at home in the 1888-89 season. In fact, they became the third test-playing nation when they took on England at Port Elizabeth, led by Owen Robert Dunell. Their early Test record was miserable as they registered ten defeats and a draw from their first eleven tests.

They recorded their first Test win against England in 1906 and gradually began competing with Australia and England, gaining knowledge and experience. Over the next few decades, they became one of the strongest sides in international cricket.

By the 1960s, though, there was considerable worldwide opposition to South Africa’s apartheid policy. The International Cricket Council thus imposed a complete international ban on the team, in sync with action taken by other global sporting bodies. As a result, some of the finest South African players, like Graeme Pollock and Mike Procter, failed to showcase their talent to the cricketing world in full glory.

The Proteas isolation ended in 1991. Just a year later, they, rather incredibly, made the semi-final of the 1992 World Cup in Australia. It was almost as if South Africa had never gone away from international cricket. They remain one of the strongest sides in international cricket, although they have gained the choker tag for their inability to win ICC tournaments.

Statistically, they are one of the most successful one-day teams, with a win percentage of over 60. However, the 1998 Champions Trophy is their only ICC triumph to date. Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock, Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, Allan Donald, and Gary Kirsten are some of the finest players who represented the country in international cricket.
