Gavaskar said that Ashwin's ability to test batsmen mentally could be crucial in a high-pressure match.

In the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash at the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has thrown his support behind off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Despite being out of favor in the ODI setup since January 2022, Ashwin has made a strong comeback, particularly in the recent Australia series.

Gavaskar, speaking on India Today in the lead-up to the crucial match, expressed his confidence in Ashwin’s abilities. He emphasized that Ashwin not only challenges the opposition with his off-spin but also poses a mental test for the batters.

“I’m not simply saying Ashwin is clever because he is an off-spinner who will turn the ball against the left-hander. You will also be mentally tested by Ashwin. And since he can handle pressure, I would want him on the squad. He can provide those 20–30 runs and form a partnership with you to make a difference at number 8, if needed,” Gavaskar said.

Highlighting Ashwin’s impressive track record in ODI World Cups, Gavaskar pointed out the spinner’s tally of 18 wickets in 11 games at an average of 25.38 and an economy rate of 4.27 runs per over. This remarkable record adds weight to Gavaskar’s endorsement of Ashwin’s inclusion in the lineup for the crucial clash against Pakistan.

Ashwin’s recent performance in the second ODI against Australia, where he secured figures of 3/41, played a pivotal role in India sealing the series victory against their arch-rivals. Additionally, Ashwin showcased his prowess in the opening World Cup game against Australia, finishing with excellent figures of 1/34 in ten overs.

Both India and Pakistan enter the match with two wins each in the World Cup campaign. The Men in Blue secured victories against Australia and Afghanistan, while Pakistan triumphed over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.
