Former England captain, Eoin Morgan has expressed his view that Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott should continue leading the England cricket team at least until the T20 World Cup in 2024. Despite the current challenges faced by the team in the ICC World Cup 2023, Morgan emphasized the importance of stability in leadership.

Morgan noted that the positions of coach Matthew Mott and captain Jos Buttler could be at risk if England fails to qualify for the Champions Trophy in 2025. The team’s disappointing performance in the World Cup, where they have lost six out of seven matches and are currently at the bottom of the points table, has raised concerns about their qualification for the upcoming tournament.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Morgan acknowledged the difficulties faced by the team but advocated for continuity in leadership.

“I definitely believe that Jos and Matthew Mott should continue in their roles, at least until the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean next June. This is a major challenge for Matthew Mott in English and international men’s cricket, and Jos has previous experience in similar situations. They are still building a strong relationship with each other,” he said.

Reflecting on England’s T20 World Cup win in 2022, Morgan credited the success to the pre-existing leadership group in the team before Mott’s arrival. He emphasized that Mott should be given a chance to rectify the current situation and praised the players for their role in the previous victory.

“If England doesn’t secure qualification for the Champions Trophy in this World Cup, I believe Rob Key, the ECB’s director of cricket, will face intense pressure to make changes. Whether it’s Matthew Mott or Jos Butler, there will be a need for adjustments in various strategies and planning,” he concluded.

Jos Buttler wants to continue to lead the England side

Jos Buttler, determined to continue leading the England cricket team, faces a critical evaluation after the disappointing World Cup campaign. Despite the team’s struggles, Buttler expressed his eagerness to stay on as captain during discussions with his employers.

The tournament has been a disappointment for both Buttler and the team, managing only two wins in eight games in their title defense. Their last chance for redemption comes in the group-stage finale against Pakistan in Kolkata. Although England’s World Cup hopes are still alive after a convincing 160-run victory over the Netherlands, Buttler’s personal performance has been lackluster, scoring only 111 runs in eight innings with an average of under 14.

In preparation for the clash with Pakistan, Buttler is scheduled to meet with England cricket director Rob Key. The 33-year-old captain hopes to lead a revamped squad on a tour of the West Indies next month, expressing his desire to continue in his leadership role.

“I want to. Rob Key is coming to India today. We can talk with him and the coach, and we can create a plan for that tour,” Buttler said.

“It’s been a tough period, not securing cricket wins or performing up to our expectations. I’m pleased with this win,” he said on England’s win against Netherlands.

Buttler further emphasized the significance of the upcoming match against Pakistan.

“It’s a crucial match for us, extremely important. Throughout this trip, we haven’t met our performance expectations, and we aim to exit India with a strong performance,” he concluded.

Defending champions England are having a disastrous World Cup campaign as they are placed last on the table with just one win in six matches. The Three Lions cannot qualify for the semi-finals but are also fearing to miss the 2025 Champions Trophy spot as new rules suggest that the top-seven placed team in this World Cup would qualify for the Champions Trophy.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan assessed Jos Buttler-led side’s performance and blamed the central contract behind the poor campaign.

ECB released multi-year contracts to English players in the middle of the World Cup. Vaughan remarked that the details of contracts would have been discussed at the breakfast table, which might have been an utter distraction.

“ECB should not have released the contracts midway through the World Cup. We have players that can frighten teams but have not played that way. When contracts are not right, then you talk about it at the breakfast table daily to know who is getting what. It’s a complete and utter distraction. It should’ve been sorted out before and if not before, it should’ve been left till the end of the World Cup.”

England ICC World Cup 2023

England, who lost to India at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, are on the brink of crashing the ICC World Cup 2023 as they have lost five of their six matches and are placed last on the table.

Besides the semi-final qualification, the defending champions are likely to miss the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan because of their position in the ICC World Cup 2023 table.

In the latest events, a new qualification process has been approved by the ICC, which states that the top seven teams from the league stage of the ICC World Cup 2023 will qualify for the Champions Trophy which is an eight-team tournament.

Pakistan, being the hosts have qualified for the Champions Trophy, but England need to finish in the top eight by the end of the league stage of the World Cup if they want to feature in the Champions Trophy.

England have never won the Champions Trophy, and missing out on this tournament would be a big loss for them. The last edition took place in 2017, where Pakistan emerged as the champions after they beat India in the finals.

England star player Ben Stokes has narrated a scary incident he experienced in India recently while travelling in an auto-rickshaw late at night.

Stokes took to his Instagram, where he shared a clip from an interview revealing that he and Liam Livingstone along with their strength and conditioning coach, Andy Mitchell were travelling late at night in an auto, which is when they were narrowly escaped being hit by a car at a roundabout.

“So, me and Liam Livingstone are pretty big lads, and we also had our strength and conditioning coach, Andy Mitchell, who is even bigger than us. Now, tuk-tuk’s aren’t very big. So, you can imagine that we were pretty squashed in the back of his tuk-tuk. We were just running up to the roundabout and the driver does not slow down and gets so close to the car,” stated Stokes. Here is the video of the incident.

The place appears to be a roundabout in Delhi. Nonetheless, England are having a disastrous run at this World Cup. Out of the four matches, the defending champions have won just one game.

Talking about Ben Stokes, he missed the first three matches due to a hip niggle and has failed to perform in his comeback match against South Africa.

Defending champions England have gotten off to a terrible start at the ICC World Cup 2023 as they lost three matches out of the four they have played so far.

In their previous match against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, England lost by 229 runs, their biggest defeat in ODI World Cup history.

In the latest events, England’s star player Joe Root has reflected on the defeat and put the blame on the rising pollution levels in India and Mumbai, in particular.

Mumbai’s air quality dipped recently, where several residents complained about breathing issues and in fact, the city recorded a worse air quality than Delhi a few days ago. Root remarked that it felt like eating air and several English players are having trouble playing in this pollution.

” I’ve obviously played in hotter conditions and more humid conditions but not anything like this before. It just felt like you couldn’t get your breath. It felt like eating the air. It was unique. Klaasen was struggling. Adil Rashid for gasping for air while he was walking back to his run-up.”

I do not know if it was poor air quality, but it felt like quite a hazy day,” remarked Root. Notably, Mumbai’s AQI was around 500, 10 times more than London’s.

The match between England and South Africa is underway at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Three Lions, fielding first, got off to a good start, as they got rid of dangerous Quinton de Kock on the second ball of the match.

On his 2nd ball of the first over, Reece Topley managed to get a thick outside edge of Quinton’s bat, and Jos Buttler made no mistake behind the wickets. A dream-like start for Topley did not last long, as a few overs later, he suffered an injury and had to leave the field.

Topley, who has had a start-stop career, injured his left-hand finger on the fifth ball of the 7th over. The physios attended him and asked him to leave the field, following which he was frustrated. He threw a chair and smashed the window pane in the dressing room out of anger. Here is the viral picture of Topley throwing the chair in anger.

Topley has had poor luck in big tournaments, as he was ruled out of the 2022 T20 World Cup due to an injury. Further, he was injured again during IPL 2023 and got ruled out of the cash-studded league.

Topley suffered an injury scare during England’s previous match, but this injury looks serious, and the Three Lions would pray for him to not be ruled out of this tournament.
