Sehwag said that the loss was "on the cards" and that Pakistan needs to focus on their "many weaknesses" instead of making excuses.

In a stunning turn of events at the Cricket World Cup 2023, Pakistan faced their maiden ODI defeat to Afghanistan by 8 wickets. The Pakistani cricket squad, led by Babar Azam, found themselves outclassed by Afghanistan in every aspect of the game.

Both the batting and bowling units failed to deliver, resulting in Afghanistan securing their first-ever victory over Pakistan in an ODI match. The lackluster performance extended beyond the pitch, encompassing subpar efforts in batting, bowling, and fielding.

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag didn’t hold back on social media, slamming Pakistan for making excuses. Sehwag took to X to criticize Pakistan.

“Pakistan is an unpredictable side, but the way they have been making excuses for their earlier defeats, this was certainly on the cards. Just did not focus on their many weaknesses. What a proud day for Afghanistan came close many times, but today crossed the line.”

Sehwag wasn’t alone in his criticism, as former Indian opener Aakash Chopra also voiced his opinions on the matter.

“Naseem Shah is a damn good bowler. No doubt about it. But using his absence as an excuse for losing three matches in a row is a cop-out. People from Pakistan on this platform need to ask questions to the PCB instead. Finished fourth in the Asia Cup. Now, the World Cup. How did it come to this?”, Chopra wrote on X.

With three defeats in five matches, Pakistan’s aspirations for a spot in the semi-finals hang in the balance. The critiques from Sehwag and Chopra shed light on the need for introspection and accountability within the Pakistani cricket fraternity.
