Shaheen and Haris
Shaheen gave away the most runs in a World Cup match for Pakistan

New Zealand went all guns blazing against Pakistan in a must-win match for both teams, as the Kiwis, batting first, put up 401 runs on the board in fifty overs. It is the first time New Zealand scored 400 or more runs in a World Cup match.

The Pakistani bowlers were smashed all over the park and had a day to forget with the ball. Pakistan’s two premier bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf went for runs and scripted embarrassing feats.

Shaheen, who is the second-joint leading wicket-taker in this World Cup with 16 wickets in seven matches, went wicketless against New Zealand and also gave away 90 runs in his 10 overs, which is the most expensive spell by a Pakistani bowler in World Cup history.

Interestingly, he broke Haris Rauf’s record of conceding 85 runs in 10 overs, which he set in the same match a few overs earlier. Here is the list of the most expensive spells by a Pakistan bowler in the World Cup.

  • Shaheen Afridi – 0/90 in 10 overs vs NZ today*
  • Haris Rauf – 1/85 in 10 overs vs New Zealand today*
  • Hassan Ali – 1/84 in 9 overs vs India in 2019
  • Haris Rauf – 3/83 in 8 overs vs Australia in 2023

Shaheen also ended his streak of picking up a wicket in his previous 24 ODI matches. This spell has come days after Afirid became the No.1 ODI bowler in the ICC rankings.

Haris Rauf also registered an embarrassing record, as he conceded the most sixes by a bowler in a World Cup edition.

Rauf has conceded 16 sixes in this World Cup, the most by any bowler in a single edition of the World Cup.
