India ICC World Cup 2023

India recorded one of the biggest one-sided wins in ODI history, dismantling a poor Sri Lankan outfit in match number 33 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday at the Wankhede. India recorded a score of 357/8 in 50 overs. Sri Lanka were then folded for their 3rd-lowest ODI score ever (55/10).

India lost Rohit Sharma early before Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli scored 92 and 88, respectively, adding 189 runs. Shreyas Iyer then took over and helped India go past 350 with an 82-run effort. For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madushanka claimed a five-wicket haul.

Sri Lanka were pegged back early on and were 3/4, 14/6, 22/7, and 29/8 before eventually being dismissed. Jasprit Bumrah started the collapse with the very first ball before Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami joined the party. Playing just his third match, Shami once again took a fifer. Siraj’s love affair with Sri Lanka gained momentum as well.

India have now qualified for the semis for the fourth successive occasion (2011-2023). Sri Lanka have joined Bangladesh to be eliminated from the 2023 World Cup. Here are the major records broken.

4th-highest World Cup score for Team India

As per ESPNcricinfo, India’s 357/8 is now their fourth-highest team total in ODI World Cups. India, who went past 350-plus totals in World Cups for the fifth time, registered their second-highest score against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, India also put up the fifth-highest team total in ODIs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This is also India’s first score of 300-plus at this venue.

SL post this unwanted team total

Sri Lanka have recorded their third-lowest score in ODI history. Sri Lanka’s lowest score is 43/10 versus South Africa in 2012. Meanwhile, they were folded for 50 versus India in the Asia Cup final in September. And now, their 55/10 is the third-lowest (19.5 overs). SL also recorded 55/10 versus West Indies in 1987 in 28-plus overs.

Second-biggest win in ODI WCs

India’s 302-run victory is now the second-best in terms of margins in ODI World Cups. Australia’s 309-run win versus the Netherlands earlier in the 2023 World Cup remains the best. This is also India’s second-best win in ODIs. Their 317-run win over SL remains the highest.

Most successful bowler for India in World Cups

Shami claimed 5/18 from five overs. He has raced to 45 ODI World Cup wickets, surpassing Indian duo Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan to become the most successful bowler for the nation. Notably, Srinath and Zaheer took more matches than Shami to get to 44 WC wickets each.

Joint-most number of five-wicket hauls in ODI World Cups

Shami now owns the joint-highest number of five-wicket hauls in ODI World Cups. He has gone level with Australia’s Mitchell Starc in this regard. Meanwhile, the likes of Glenn McGrath, Shaheen Afridi, Shahid Afridi, Mustafizur Rahman, and Alf de Mel have two five-wicket hauls in ODI WCs.

Shami gets past Starc with this World Cup record

Shami now has four four-wicket hauls (highest among pacers) and three fifers (joint-highest). He now has seven four-wickets-in-an-innings and over, surpassing Starc (6), who owns three four-fers and three five-wicket hauls.

Shami scripts history, joins Waqar in elusive list

As per Cricbuzz, Shami has become just the second bowler in ODI history to bag three consecutive 4-plus wicket hauls more than once. This is Shami’s second such streak after having claimed 4/40, 4/16 and 5/69 in three consecutive innings at the 2019 World Cup. Only Pakistan’s Waqar Younis has achieved this feat more often – three times (twice in 1990 and once in 1992).

Shami achieves this record at the Wankhede

Shami recorded the best figures by a pacer at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Meanwhile, he now owns the second-best figures by a bowler in ODIs here. Murali Kartik’s six-wicket haul versus Australia remains the best at this venue.

Shami owns the most fifers for India

Shami has 185 ODI scalps, claiming his fourth fifer. He has steered clear of Harbhajan Singh and Srinath (3 each) to register the most five-wicket hauls for India in ODIs.

3rd-best figures for India vs Sri Lanka

Shami has registered the third-best bowling figures by an Indian bowler versus Sri Lanka in ODI cricket history. Mohammed Siraj (6/21) and Ashish Nehra (6/59) are above Shami (5/18).

A maiden dismissal in the 90s for Gill

India’s opener, Gill, managed 92, hammering 11 fours and two sixes. For the first time in his ODI career, Gill has been out in the 90s. He owns 11 fifties and six hundreds at 62.14. Gill also became the first to get past 1400 ODI runs in 2023.

13,500 ODI runs for Kohli

Kohli scored an 88-run knock. With this, he became the fourth player to rack up 13500 ODI runs. Kohli has 13525 runs at a prolific 58.04. He slammed his 70th ODI fifty and 136th in international cricket.

1000 ODI runs this year

Kohli also went past 1000 ODI runs in 2023. He is the third Indian to do so. Kohli has 1054 runs at 65.87. His strike rate is well above 100. He has four tons and six fifties. Meanwhile, Kohli got to the 1000-plus run mark in a year for the 8th time in ODIs.

13th 50-plus score in World Cups

Playing his 33rd World Cup match, Kohli has amassed 1472 runs at 54.51. He has three tons and 10 fifties. Kohli’s tally of 13 fifty-plus World Cup scores is only second to that of former Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar (21). Kohli has 442 runs at 88.40 in the ongoing World Cup (second-highest).

World Cup: Joint-second-highest partnership for India versus SL

Gill and Kohli added an 189-run stand, which is now the joint-second-highest partnership for India versus Sri Lanka in ODI World Cups. The duo has matched Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul’s opening partnership against SL in the 2019 edition.

2000 ODI runs for Iyer

Shreyas Iyer slammed a fiery 82-run knock. He is now the 3rd-fastest Indian to clock 2000 ODI runs. Iyer got the feat in 49 innings. Gill (38 innings) and Shikhar Dhawan (48 innings) have reached the milestone faster among Indian batters.

Fifer for record-breaking Madushanka

Madushanka became the first SL bowler with a WC fifer versus India. He claimed 5/80. Notably, it’s also the most expensive fifer versus India in ODIs. Pakistan will look to resurrect their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign when they take on South Africa in match number 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After starting well, Babar Azam’s Pakistan have faltered since, losing against India, Australia, and Afghanistan. Babar’s men need to win their remaining games to stand a chance of qualification. Meanwhile, South Africa have been flying high, breaking several records one after the other. One expects a stern contest with plenty of fire on offer.

In terms of the ODI head-to-head records, out of 82 meetings, SA have locked in 51 wins to Pakistan’s 30 (NR: 1). In the ICC ODI World Cup history, in five meetings, Pakistan have amassed two wins to South Africa’s three. Notably, Pakistan have beaten SA in both the 2019 and 2015 ODI World Cups.

SA are placed second in the ongoing World Cup with eight points, whereas Pakistan are 5th with a tally of four points. An in-form Quinton de Kock remains the main focus for SA alongside Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram. Pakistan need players to step up across departments.

Here, we present the records that can be broken.

3000 powerplay runs for De Kock

Quinton de Kock has been a revelation in the 2023 ODI World Cup, having hammered three centuries already, including a 178-run knock versus Bangladesh. De Kock, who goes hard in the first 10 overs, is set to clock a unique milestone in the ODI format. As per ESPNcricinfo, De Kock owns 2982 runs in the power play overs and is 18 shy of the 3000-run mark. He can become the third batter in ODI cricket to hammer 3000-plus runs in the first 10 overs after Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. Notably, the power play change of overs 1-10 came into effect in 2005.

3rd SA batter with this milestone in ODI World Cups

De Kock is known for his boundary-hitting and placements. He is an aggressor and sets the tempo. De Kock owns 94 fours in ODI World Cups and is six shy of 100. He can become the 3rd South African batter after AB de Villiers and Herschelle Gibbs to slam 100-plus fours in the tournament. Recently, De Kock surpassed 750 fours in ODIs.

8000 List A runs for De Kock

De Kock owns 6583 runs in ODIs at 46.03. And overall, in the 50-over format, the southpaw has hammered 7969 runs. He is 31 shy of the 8000-run mark in List A cricket. Notably, he can also get to 900 fours in the format (890), besides 150 sixes as well (145).

De Kock can equal ABD with this giant record

De Kock has taken the 2023 World Cup by storm, and as mentioned above, he owns three tons already. If De Kock is in his element and gets another hundred, he will become the joint-top centurion for SA in the ODI World Cups. De Villiers owns four centuries in the global event. Meanwhile, he can also equal Gibbs in terms of ODI tons for SA (21).

Mohammad Rizwan and Aidan Markram can get to 2000 ODI runs

Mohammad Rizwan will aim for a strong score against the Proteas. He is Pakistan’s best bet in the middle order. Rizwan owns 1995 runs in ODIs and is 5 short of the 2000-run mark. Rizwan averages 39.90 in ODIs.

Another player who is targeting the 2000-run record in ODI cricket is South Africa’s Aiden Markram. Notably, Markram has enjoyed solid form in the ongoing 2023 World Cup and can be a big-match player. Markram needs 70 runs to get to the milestone. He owns 1930 runs at an average of 37.11.

Hasan Ali one shy of 100 ODI scalps

Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali is one shy of 100 ODI scalps. Hasan owns 99 ODI wickets to date at 30.32. He has played 65 ODIs. Overall, he owns 151 scalps in the 50-over format at 28.31.

Shaheen set to appear in his 50th ODI

Pakistan left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi remains a focal point. He has a solid record in the ICC Cricket World Cup and will lead Pakistan’s bowling unit. Shaheen is set to make his 50th ODI appearance. In 49 matches, the left-arm pacer has managed 96 scalps at 23.54. He is also four shy of 100 ODI scalps.

Babar can become the 3rd-highest WC scorer for PAK

Pakistan will look up to skipper Babar Azam for some solidity with the bat. In the previous match, Babar scored a defiant fifty (74). Babar, who has scored 631 runs at the World Cup, can become the third-highest scorer for his side by surpassing Inzamam-ul-Haq (717). Babar can also become just the fifth Pakistani player to smash 700-plus World Cup runs.

50th score of 50-plus for Babar

Babar has amassed 5566 runs in ODI cricket at a whopping 56.79. He has slammed 30 fifties and 19 centuries to date. If Babar gets to another 50-plus score, it will be his 50th for Pakistan.

Babar can equal Misbah’s World Cup record

Babar has smashed six fifty-plus scores in ODI World Cups, including one century and five fifties. He needs one such score to equal Misbah-ul-Haq (7) and become the joint-second-highest in terms of 50-plus scores for the Men in Green. Only Javed Miandad (9) owns more such scores.

3000 ODI runs in Asia for Babar

Babar has accumulated 2913 runs on Asian soil in ODIs. He averages 59.44 with the help of 12 tons and 17 fifties. Babar is 87 shy of 3000 runs in Asia.
